Heron Close is situated alongside an East Anglian estuary. Susan Swann is a teacher who shares a house with Miss Kant, a retired lecturer. Also on the Close are the elderly Whitwhams and James Cobb. Sandy Robson and David Fairbairn, both freelancers, share another house. Tony Smith and his wife Lisa live next door to Susan, and Lisa works at the same school. And then there's Patrick Dawson and his next-door neighbour, the widow Eva Maitland. Susan thinks that they are a typical bunch, but then something happens to disturb the Close one summer's evening. And worse is to follow.
