This new book by the author of Steps to Follow describes the early rehabilitation of the patient who has sustained a traumatic brain injury or an equally severe lesion due to some other cause. Illustrated with some 600 photographs of actual patients, the broad spectrum of treatment, from the intensive care unit to the re-education of walking is presented in detail. Chapters are included on perceptual disturbances, positioning, moving and standing the unconscious patient; learning to eat, drink and speak again as well as activities for retraining balance and motor control. Ways in which to prevent or overcome loss of range of motion are described in order to give each patient the chance to achieve his or her full potential. The well-referenced book will be of value for all professionals working with brain-injured people, particularly doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and nurses. Relatives of patients should also have no difficulty in understanding the language used in this text, which will enable them to become actively involved in helping therapeutically.
